Holmes Beach Fishing Charter
Holmes Beach sits in the middle of Anna Maria Island, the largest of the three island cities and the one most visitors actually stay in. It's home to Manatee Public Beach, the Kingfish Boat Ramp, and most of the island's vacation rentals, restaurants, and tackle shops. Geographically, it's the perfect launch point for fishing around AMI: bay flats to the east, Gulf beaches to the west, the Tampa Bay passes a short run north, and Sarasota Bay opening up to the south.
Captain Charlie Tita has fished these waters for over 35 years. Trips depart from our home dock at 801 Riverside Dr E in Bradenton (a 15 minute drive across the Manatee Avenue bridge from Holmes Beach), with the option to pick up directly at Kingfish Boat Ramp (752 Manatee Ave, Holmes Beach) by advance arrangement, makes our nearshore charters an easy choice..
Why Holmes Beach is a great launch point
Three reasons fishing out of the Holmes Beach area is excellent:
-
Quick access to multiple fisheries. From Kingfish Boat Ramp at the foot of the Manatee Avenue bridge, we can be on bay flats in 5 minutes, in the passes off Bean Point in 15, off Egmont Key in 25, or fishing the AMI Gulf beaches in 10. Few launch points in Florida give you that kind of radial access.
-
Protected water for tough days. Anna Maria Sound, just east of the ramp, holds fish on bad-weather days when the Gulf is too rough. Grassy Point Preserve and Neal Preserve sit on either side of the bridge, and the wadeable flats around them are productive year-round.
-
Tide-friendly geography. The Manatee Avenue Bridge causeway funnels current and bait, making the area around the bridge piers and adjacent flats one of the more reliable feeding zones on the island.
Local landmarks around Holmes Beach
If you're staying in Holmes Beach, here's the lay of the land for a fishing day:
-
Kingfish Boat Ramp (752 Manatee Ave) — public ramp at the foot of the AMI bridge. Pickup option for our charters.
-
Manatee Public Beach — the big public beach in the heart of Holmes Beach with parking, restrooms, food, and the Sandbar restaurant area.
-
Grassy Point Preserve — south of the ramp, walkable boardwalk, productive shallow flats around it.
-
Neal Preserve — 120 acres of mangrove and wetlands east of the bridge. Great for birds and the fish that feed on the edges.
-
Anna Maria Sound — the body of water east of AMI between the island and the mainland. Trout, redfish, snook in season.
-
Bimini Bay — a smaller sheltered body within the island, productive in cool weather.
What we target around Holmes Beach
Spot type Species
Anna Maria Sound flats Trout, redfish, snook, jack crevalle
Manatee Avenue bridge structure Snook, jacks, sheepshead, snapper
AMI Gulf beach off Holmes Beach Snook (summer), pompano (spring), Spanish mackerel
Mangrove edges in Bimini Bay Snook, redfish, mangrove snapper
Tampa Bay passes (Bean Point, Passage Key) Tarpon, snook, big trout
A typical Holmes Beach trip starts on the bay side, especially if conditions are calm, then runs out to the Gulf side or up to the passes if the bite is right. Captain Charlie reads the day and adjusts. Snook fishing along the Holmes Beach canals is some of the best in the area.
Holmes Beach fishing by season
-
Spring (March through May): Pompano on the AMI Gulf beach, big trout in the sound, redfish active, snook migrating to passes. Great mixed bag season.
-
Summer (June through August): Snook on the beach right off Manatee Public Beach, tarpon in the passes, mangrove snapper steady, kids' trips fishing the flats off Grassy Point.
-
Fall (September through November): Bull redfish in Anna Maria Sound, snook feeding hard before cold weather, kingfish nearshore, mackerel migrations along the beaches.
-
Winter (December through February): Sheepshead around the bridge pilings and docks, trout in deeper flats, snook tucked into Bimini Bay and warmer creeks. Trips often start later and target the warmest part of the day.

Holmes Beach fishing FAQs
Can my charter pick me up at Kingfish Boat Ramp? Yes, with advance arrangement. Captain Charlie will text you the meeting point the day before.
Is parking at Kingfish Boat Ramp difficult? On busy weekends and during peak season, yes. Show up early. Parking is free but limited, and overnight parking is not allowed.
How far is Holmes Beach from your dock at 801 Riverside Dr E? About 15 minutes by car across the Manatee Avenue (SR 64) bridge.
Can I fish from Manatee Public Beach? You can surf cast from public beaches with a Florida saltwater license. The fishing is decent but limited compared to a boat charter, especially for snook and other structure-oriented species.
What's the difference between Holmes Beach, Anna Maria, and Bradenton Beach? They're three separate cities on the same island. Anna Maria is at the north end (Bean Point, City Pier), Holmes Beach is in the middle (Manatee Public Beach, Kingfish ramp), and Bradenton Beach is at the south end (Historic Bridge Street Pier, Coquina Beach).
Is Holmes Beach good for tarpon? Yes, especially the passes a short run north of it. Peak May through July.
Can we do a half-day trip from Holmes Beach? Yes. 4-hour trips are popular and start at $425. 6 and 8 hour options give you more water to cover.
Is the fishing different on the bay side vs the Gulf side? Yes. Bay side is calmer, more inshore species, sheltered from wind. Gulf side has bigger water, beach snook, mackerel, and the option to push offshore for nearshore reefs and ledges.
Do you offer trips in winter? Year-round. Winter fishing in Holmes Beach is excellent for sheepshead, trout, and warm-water-pocket snook.
What ages can come on a Holmes Beach charter? 4 and up. Younger kids by parental judgment call.
