Palmetto Fishing Charter
Palmetto sits directly across the Manatee River from our home dock. From 801 Riverside Dr E, you can literally see the Palmetto shoreline. That's how local this water is to Captain Charlie Tita, who has been fishing the Manatee River, Snead Island, and Terra Ceia Bay since boyhood.
Palmetto is the underrated half of the Bradenton-Palmetto fishery. While most charter pages talk about Anna Maria Island and Tampa Bay, the Palmetto side of the river holds extraordinary fishing in waters most visiting anglers never see, ideal water for our inshore charter. Snead Island, Emerson Point, the Terra Ceia mangroves, and the upper Manatee River all sit within 15 minutes of our dock.
Why Palmetto fishing is special
A few reasons this area is so productive:
The mouth of the Manatee River is a feeding zone. Where freshwater meets saltwater, baitfish concentrate, and predators line up to eat. Snead Island sits right at this convergence and is one of the best ambush zones in the entire region.
Terra Ceia Bay is sheltered. When the wind is up and Tampa Bay is rough, Terra Ceia stays fishable. That alone makes it one of our most-used spots in winter and during front passages.
It's less pressured than AMI. Most charters launch from Cortez or Anna Maria. The Palmetto side gets less boat traffic, which means less pressured fish and more aggressive bites.
Mangrove shoreline for days. Snead Island, the FISH Preserve area, and the Terra Ceia shoreline give us miles of mangrove edge to fish. Snook, redfish, and snapper love this kind of structure.
Local landmarks our trips work near
-
Manatee River mouth — where the river opens into lower Tampa Bay between Snead Island and DeSoto Point.
-
Snead Island — the island west of Palmetto, with Emerson Point Preserve at its tip.
-
Emerson Point Preserve (5801 17th St W, Palmetto) — 365-acre preserve with miles of shoreline. Fishing is allowed from the perimeter, and the surrounding water is some of the most productive in the area.
-
Portavant Mound — ancient Native American temple mound at the preserve, visible from the water.
-
Terra Ceia Bay — sheltered bay north of Snead Island, mangrove tunnels and skinny-water flats.
-
Sunshine Skyway Bridge — visible from the point at Emerson, dominating the eastern view.
-
DeSoto National Memorial — across the river on the Bradenton side, marker for Spanish exploration history. We fish the river right between it and Snead Island.
-
Riverside Dr E — our home dock, directly across the river from Palmetto's downtown waterfront.
What we target around Palmetto
Spot Species
Manatee River mouth Snook, redfish, jacks, mackerel, sharks
Snead Island shoreline Snook, redfish, snapper, sheepshead
Emerson Point / Tampa Bay edge Trout, redfish, snook, kingfish (nearshore)
Terra Ceia Bay flats Redfish, trout, snook
Terra Ceia mangrove tunnels Snook, redfish, snapper
Upper Manatee River (above the bridge) Snook, jacks, sheepshead, occasional tarpon
A typical Palmetto-focused trip might start in Terra Ceia Bay at first light, then push out to Snead Island shoreline as the tide moves, then work the Manatee River mouth on the falling tide. The flexibility is the point. The Skyway pilings nearby produce in our tarpon trips every summer.
Seasonal pattern in Palmetto waters
Spring (March through May): Big trout in Terra Ceia, redfish on the mangrove edges, sheepshead around Snead Island docks, mackerel pushing into the river mouth.
Summer (June through August): Snook in the river mouth and up the Manatee River, mangrove snapper in the bay, tarpon occasionally rolling at the river mouth and out at Emerson Point.
Fall (September through November): Bull redfish staging at the river mouth, snook feeding hard, kingfish a short run nearshore, big trout returning to the flats.
Winter (December through February): Sheepshead around docks and pilings, redfish in Terra Ceia, snook tucked into the upper Manatee River and warmer creek systems. Cold mornings, warm afternoons, productive fishing.
Practical Palmetto trip info
Distance from our dock: Palmetto's waterfront is directly across the Manatee River from 801 Riverside Dr E. We can be in Palmetto-side fishing water in 5 minutes.
Pickup options: Default is our home dock. With advance notice we can occasionally arrange Palmetto-side meetups. The simpler option is meeting at Bradenton.
Why book this trip if I'm not from Palmetto? Even if you're staying on Anna Maria Island or in Sarasota, a Palmetto-focused trip gives you fishing water that 90% of vacation charters never visit. Less pressured fish, more variety, and historic geography (Native American mounds visible from the boat).
Where to eat after the trip: Riverhouse Reef and Grill at Riverside Drive in Palmetto, Mar Vista Dockside Restaurant on the bay (a bit further), or back across the river to Bradenton's Riverwalk dining options.
Fueling up before the trip: Coffee shops along US 41 in Palmetto, gas station options on 17th Street.
Palmetto fishing FAQs
Where do Palmetto fishing charters depart from? Our charters depart from 801 Riverside Dr E in Bradenton, directly across the Manatee River from Palmetto. We can be in Palmetto fishing water within 5-10 minutes.
Can I be picked up on the Palmetto side? With advance notice, sometimes yes, depending on the day's plan. Usually it's simpler to meet at our home dock.
What's the fishing like in the Manatee River? Excellent and underrated. Snook, redfish, jacks, sheepshead, mackerel in season, occasional tarpon. The river is sheltered from wind and fishes well on days when the open bay is rough.
Can we fish at Emerson Point Preserve? Yes, the water around Emerson Point is some of our regular fishing area. Note that fishing inside the preserve (from shore) has restrictions to protect vegetation. From a boat working the perimeter and adjacent water, we have full access.
What about Terra Ceia Bay? One of our most-used winter and bad-weather spots. Sheltered, productive, scenic, and rarely crowded with other charters.
Is there much boat traffic in this area? Less than around AMI. The Manatee River and Terra Ceia Bay see local boaters but not the tourist charter traffic that the AMI passes get.
Can families do a Palmetto trip? Yes. Protected water, calm conditions most days, productive bite, and you're never far from the dock if someone needs to come back early.
How long should I book? 4 hours covers a tide and a few productive spots. 6 hours lets us range from Terra Ceia to the river mouth to nearshore. 8 hours opens up everything.
Is Palmetto fishing good year-round? Yes. Winter is actually a strength here because of the sheltered water options.
