Nearshore Fishing Charter

A nearshore charter is the best of both worlds: real Gulf of America bottom fishing without the long, expensive run that a true offshore trip demands. Our nearshore grounds start just off the beaches of Holmes Beach and run out to the artificial reefs. We push out 3 to 9 miles from Anna Maria Island and the Bradenton coast and fish the structure that holds the most fish: artificial reefs, ledges, rock piles, and hard bottom. The water gets cleaner, the species get bigger, and the variety opens up dramatically.
Captain Charlie Tita has spent over three decades learning the bottom off Manatee County, and that's what nearshore fishing is really about. The fish are on the spots. The job is knowing which spots are producing on which day.
What we target on nearshore trips
The mix changes by season, but here's what regularly comes over the rail:
Snapper: mangrove (year-round), lane (year-round), red snapper (limited federal season), and the occasional yellowtail. Mangroves are the bread and butter, schoolies up to 4 pounds with shots at bigger fish on deeper structure.
Grouper: gag and red are the main targets when seasons are open. Big, mean, and hard pulling. Fishing the right ledges with live bait or large jigs is how we put them in the boat.
Kingfish: May through November, kings stack up over nearshore structure. Hard runs, sharp teeth, and a great eating fish if you keep them.
Spanish mackerel: schooling, fast, and great fun on light tackle. Casting Gotcha plugs into busting fish is one of the most active styles of fishing we do.
Cobia: spring through fall, sight-fished off buoys, channel markers, and around bait pods. Trophy fish that fight like a freight train.
Sharks: blacktips, bonnetheads, and bigger sharks all show up nearshore. We can target them specifically or take what comes.
Other regulars: sheepshead on inshore-side wrecks, triggerfish (in season), porgies, jack crevalle, barracuda, and the occasional permit.
Where we fish
Nearshore for us means staying within the 9-mile range from the Bradenton/Anna Maria coastline. That keeps the run reasonable (45 minutes or so to most spots) and lets us fish a 4 hour trip productively, which a true offshore run can't.
Spot type What it holds
Artificial reefs (county-deployed) Snapper, grouper, kingfish, sharks
Natural ledges and hard bottom Big grouper, snapper, hogfish
Wrecks 3-7 miles out Mixed species, cobia, kingfish
Channel markers and pass mouths Cobia, mackerel, kingfish on the surface
Beach edges and bait schools Spanish mackerel, kingfish, sharks
How we fish
Nearshore is mostly bottom and structure fishing, with some surface action mixed in. Tactics include:
-
Live bait (threadfin, sardines, pinfish) on knocker rigs and chicken rigs
-
Jigging with vertical jigs and bucktails on grouper structure
-
Free-lining live bait around bait pods and surface activity
-
Trolling spoons and plugs between spots for kingfish and mackerel
-
Sight casting to cobia on the surface
The Parker 25' is rigged for it. Twin Yamahas to make the run, Deep-V hull to handle a Gulf chop, plenty of rod holders, and a livewell sized for a serious bait load.
Who nearshore trips are good for
-
Anglers who want bigger fish than inshore typically produces
-
Groups who like variety (you'll likely catch 4-7 species)
-
Folks who want to stock the freezer
-
Experienced anglers who want a workout on heavier tackle
-
Anyone curious about offshore fishing but not ready for an 8-12 hour run
A nearshore trip is more demanding than inshore. The boat ride is longer, the chop can be real if there's any wind, and the fish pull harder. If anyone in the group gets seasick easily, an [inshore trip → /fishing-charter-services/inshore-fishing-charter] is the better call.

Nearshore fishing FAQs
Is nearshore the same as deep sea or offshore?
No. Deep sea or true offshore typically means 30+ miles out, 8 to 12 hour trips, and chasing pelagic species like mahi, tuna, and sailfish. Nearshore is 3 to 9 miles, much more reasonable, and fishes structure with snapper, grouper, kings, and macks. It's the sweet spot for most groups.
Will I get seasick?
Possibly, if you're prone. Take Bonine or Dramamine the night before and morning of (not the day of, that's too late). Eat something light. If you're really worried, an inshore trip is the safer call.
Can kids do nearshore?
Older kids who don't get seasick and have some fishing experience, yes. For younger kids or first-time anglers, an inshore or family trip is a much better experience.
How long should I book?
6 hours minimum to do nearshore right. 8 hours opens up more options. 4 hours can work but you'll spend a meaningful chunk of it on the run.
Do you keep the fish? Yes, within regulations. Captain Charlie cleans and bags everything at the dock at the end of the trip.
What about red snapper? Red snapper has a short federal season (typically a couple weeks in summer for private/charter).
When it's open, we'll target them. When it's not, mangrove and lane snapper take the spot and they're excellent eating.
Can we target a specific species? Absolutely. Tell us what you're after when you book and we'll plan the trip around it, weather and seasons permitting.
